This too shall pass

Trading is often seen as a numbers game, but let’s talk about something just as crucial—mental health and emotional control. I’ve consumed a ton of knowledge around trading—read countless books, taken paid courses, free ones, and studied trading psychology inside and out. One thing has become clear: emotional resilience is just as important as strategy.

Now, I’m not saying we should accept bad trades or play the victim when things don’t go our way. What I’m talking about is how we judge ourselves based on the profit and loss (P&L) chart. Too often, traders measure their worth solely by their short-term P&L, thinking it defines whether they’re good traders. But here’s the thing—trading success isn’t about every single trade; it’s about the long game.

Instead of obsessing over the P&L in the short term, focus on the bigger picture. It’s fine to have small losses—hell, they’re inevitable—but the key is making sure you land those big winners that wipe out the losses and then some. It’s okay to have a string of small losses if your wins are big enough to keep you profitable overall. No trader is perfect. None of us ever will be. But we can all aim to get better, little by little, each day.

If you’re going through a rough week, and everything feels like it’s falling apart, here’s a little secret: sometimes, the best thing to do is walk away and get some sleep. If you normally go to bed at 10 p.m., try going to sleep at 5 or 6 p.m. instead, and let your body rest. When you wake up, you might feel groggy, but you’ll have a fresh perspective. You’ll gain some clarity, and you’ll realize where you’ve been making mistakes and what’s been holding you back. Trust me, taking a step back can help you see the bigger picture.

Whether you’re having a losing week or riding high from a winning month, don’t let your emotions run the show. If you allow your emotions to dictate your decisions, you’ll end up sabotaging yourself from the inside out. Instead, treat your emotions like data points—use them to develop emotional maturity over time.

Stay safe out there, and remember this wisdom from King Solomon: he wore a ring with a simple inscription that read, “This too shall pass.” When you’re feeling down, it gives you hope. When you’re riding high, it keeps you grounded. Trading is full of ups and downs, but like everything in life, those moments are temporary.

So, keep improving, keep steady, and don’t let a bad week define you.
